Medical device manufacturer will integrate data using Qualcomm Life’s Capsule solution

SAN DIEGO — February 20, 2017 — Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Life, Inc., is collaborating with Mindray France, one of the world’s largest medical device manufacturers, to integrate medical device data to streamline alarm management across the hospital enterprise. The two companies executed an agreement to enable Mindray France to integrate data from an expansive ecosystem of medical devices leveraging Qualcomm Life’s Capsule™ platform to deliver an alarm management solution for hospitals. Mindray France selected the vendor-neutral and open Capsule platform, to solve the interoperability challenges of integrating data from a number of different devices from various medical device manufacturers.

The frequency and number of alarms emitted from medical devices can cause a sensory overload condition described as “alarm fatigue,” where clinicians become desensitized to alarms that are frequently sounded in hospitals. To address this issue, hospitals are implementing alarm management systems that better organize alarm data from medical devices.

The collaboration between Qualcomm Life and Mindray France will integrate medical device data, using Qualcomm Life’s Capsule solution, into an alarm management system managed by Mindray France’s partner, Software Team. The agreement is the first-of-its-kind between the two companies, and will allow Mindray France to resell the Capsule solution as part of their offer. Mindray’s alarm management system has already been implemented in CHU Toulouse, France, where they are leveraging the system to notify and action alarm messages, and apply customer-defined thresholds and escalation rules.

Qualcomm Life’s open, device-agnostic Capsule platform is integrated with more than 800 medical devices from multiple manufacturers, and supports the unique needs of hospitals by integrating data emitted from various biomedical devices into downstream systems, including alarm management and EMRs, to make data more actionable for clinicians.

“Mindray France is excited to collaborate with Qualcomm Life to solve the complexities of implementing an alarm management system for hospitals across France,” said Jean-Jacques Vincent, Marketing Manager, Mindray France. “Our mission is to improve health care by optimizing and sharing medical technologies with the world, and Qualcomm Life’s open, flexible and scalable Capsule connectivity solution helps us achieve this goal.”

“Qualcomm Life is thrilled to be collaborating with a leading medical device manufacturer like Mindray to help solve the pressing issue of alarm fatigue,” said Didier Argenton, vice president, sales, Qualcomm Life. “By connecting and integrating medical device data, our aim of this collaboration is to ultimately enable actionable insights that clinicians can use to improve care.”

UnitedHealthcare and Qualcomm Integrate New Wearable Devices with Wellness Program; People Earn Millions of Dollars in Financial Rewards for Being Active UnitedHealthcare and Qualcomm Integrate New Wearable Devices with Wellness Program; People Earn Millions of Dollars in Financial Rewards for Being Active

03 January 2017

  • The two companies enhance and expand UnitedHealthcare Motion, a wellness program that provides financial incentives of up to $1,500 per year to employees for being more active
  • New ‘bring-your-own-device’ (BYOD) model, enabled by Qualcomm Life, allows more activity trackers to be integrated to provide program participants with access to leading wearable brands and greater choice; Fitbit Charge 2 will be the newest wearable to be integrated
  • UnitedHealthcare Motion now available to employers in 40 states, up from 12 states at launch

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 3, 2017) – UnitedHealthcare and Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), through its wholly owned subsidiary Qualcomm Life, Inc., today announced enhancements and the expansion of UnitedHealthcare Motion™, a wellness program that provides employees with activity trackers at no additional charge and enables them to earn up to $1,500 per year by meeting certain goals for the number of daily steps.

UnitedHealthcare Motion is being showcased at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017, the annual technology convention in Las Vegas.

The two companies introduced UnitedHealthcare Motion in 2016 as a pilot in 12 states to select employers, using Qualcomm Life’s 2net™ Platform* for medical-grade connectivity that features multiple safeguards to help keep data secure. Following the successful test, the program was expanded to 40 states and will now include access to additional customized activity trackers through a ‘bring-your-own-device’ (BYOD) model. The program is now available to self-funded employers with five or more eligible employees and companies with fully insured health plans with 101 or more eligible employees.

All UnitedHealthcare Motion devices enable employees to earn up to $4 per day in deductible credits based on F.I.T. goals, which stands for frequency of walking goals (six times per day with 300 steps within five minutes at least one hour apart), intensity (3,000 steps within 30 minutes) and tenacity (10,000 total steps each day). Employers can obtain premium savings based on program participants’ combined F.I.T. results. People who consistently achieve the F.I.T. goals tend to improve their health and reduce their medical expenses.

Qualcomm Life will leverage its global connected health ecosystem and connectivity expertise to provide secure data transfer from the devices, to the Motion app and to UnitedHealthcare. Qualcomm Life will also enable the BYOD model to allow the integration of more activity trackers into the 2net Platform and UnitedHealthcare Motion, providing participants with more choice. Integrated activity trackers will be customized to enable users to see on their wrists how they are tracking against the program’s three daily F.I.T. goals.

“The growth of UnitedHealthcare Motion showcases the value of providing companies and their employees with personalized, connected health and wellness resources,” said Richard Migliori, M.D., chief medical officer of UnitedHealth Group. “Wearable technology can help encourage employees to walk each day and earn financial rewards at the same time, using secure technology that we believe is intuitive and convenient.”

The Fitbit Charge 2™ will be the newest activity tracker integrated and validated with 2net and UnitedHealthcare Motion in this BYOD model. The custom feature can be activated during early 2017 on any Charge 2 device in market by any eligible program participant.

“As the global wearables leader, we have taken another big digital-health step forward by collaborating with UnitedHealthcare and Qualcomm Life to enable people to fulfill their fitness goals and be rewarded for living a healthier lifestyle,” said James Park, co-founder and CEO, Fitbit (NYSE: FIT). “Our team custom-designed this feature to help give UnitedHealthcare Motion program participants activity insights right on their wrists, as part of our commitment to make our products integral tools to evidence-based consumer health programs.”

Employers are expected to incorporate more than 13 million wearable and fitness tracking devices into their wellness programs by 2018, according to technology consultancy Endeavors Partners. A related study published in Science & Medicine showed people tend to overestimate how much exercise they get each week by more than 50 minutes, and they underestimate sedentary time by more than two hours, underscoring the importance of a wellness program like UnitedHealthcare Motion.

“By combining UnitedHealthcare’s leadership and pioneering pro-consumer benefit designs with Qualcomm Life’s unique ability to provide effortless connectivity across an expansive ecosystem of wearables, UnitedHealthcare Motion will continue to help engage people throughout the country with the goal of enhancing their well-being,” said James Mault, M.D., F.A.C.S., vice president and chief medical officer of Qualcomm Life.

Qualcomm Life and UnitedHealthcare at CES Qualcomm Life and UnitedHealthcare will demonstrate at CES new technologies designed to simplify the consumer health care experience by making helpful, practical information more accessible through personal technology devices such as computers, smartphones and wearables.

The two companies will give away 500 activity trackers to CES attendees as part of a fundraiser. All 500 device recipients will be encouraged to walk 10,000 steps on Saturday, Jan. 7, with the goal of collectively walking 5 million steps. As part of the walking challenge, UnitedHealthcare and Qualcomm will combine to donate $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Results of the challenge will be available at www.qualcommlife.com/5millionsteps.

UnitedHealthcare Motion will be displayed at the Qualcomm booth (No. 10948) in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center and near the Digital Health Studio Live in the Sands Expo and Convention Center. 16 June 2016

System designed to build stronger connections between patients and care teams to help improve therapy adherence

CHICAGO, June 16, 2016 – Hill-Rom Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: HRC), a leading global medical technology company, today announced the introduction of the VisiVest System, a connected therapeutic solution for patients in need of airway clearance therapy. The world’s first solution combining industry leading high-frequency chest-wall oscillation (HFCWO) technology with wireless connectivity powered by Qualcomm Life, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, the VisiVest System provides therapy adherence data that may help inform decisions caregivers make for their patients, resulting in reduced risk of respiratory infections, hospitalizations, and medical costs.

Patients’ usage data from the VisiVest System is remotely and securely transmitted to the VisiView™ Health Portal via Qualcomm Life’s 2net™ Hub enabling highly secure, medical-grade connectivity and effortless user experience. The VisiView Health Portal, developed by Razorfish, a leading application development company, then displays data trends in an easy-to-use dashboard format. This connectivity fosters a closer partnership between patients and health care teams, so treatment decisions by caregivers can be more tailored and responsive, which may result in better therapy adherence.

“In healthcare, the ability to make decisions based on accurate, timely information is essential,” saidAlton Shader, president, Front Line Care at Hill-Rom. “The VisiVest System and Qualcomm Life’s 2net connectivity solution bring care teams and patients closer, helping to better manage patients’ illness and improve their quality of life.”

“We are thrilled to be working with a global industry leader in health care technology and excited by the impact our collaboration with Hill-Rom can have for chronic lung disease patients and their caregivers,”said Rick Valencia, president, Qualcomm Life, Inc. “By combining Hill-Rom’s leadership in health care with Qualcomm Life’s expertise in connectivity, we are innovating to deliver effortless connected experiences that empower patients and their care providers.”

In a pilot study conducted over the past few months, 160 patients from seven cystic fibrosis clinics have adopted The VisiVest System. Patients and care teams have responded with great enthusiasm and excitement for the technology.

“What I like most about the VisiVest System is being able to see my patients’ session data and trends,”said Tom Newton, pulmonary therapist, Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach, CA. “Now I’m not just telling my patients the more adherent they are to their therapy, the higher their pulmonary function numbers are likely to be. We can actually look at their adherence score together and have a more comprehensive conversation about their numbers.”

Connected health solutions will continue to strengthen Hill-Rom’s leadership role in the respiratory care industry.

The VisiVest™ System
Hill-Rom’s VisiVest garment provides airway clearance by inflating and deflating rapidly, applying gentle pressure to the chest wall. This works to loosen and dislodge mucus from the bronchial walls and move it to larger airways where it can be cleared by coughing or suctioning. If not removed, retained secretions may contribute to increased rates of respiratory infection, hospitalization and reduced lung function.

The VisiView™ Health Portal
The VisiView Health Portal is Hill-Rom’s first digital health product designed to enhance communication between health care teams and patients. The VisiView Portal is a secure, cloud-based system that automatically receives information from respiratory care devices in a patient’s home. Patients and healthcare teams share a user-friendly dashboard to view therapy data and trends for enhanced teamwork.

Qualcomm and Northern Arizona Healthcare Expand Home Health Monitoring Program to Enhance the Care of Cardiac, Pulmonary and Post-operative Patients Qualcomm and Northern Arizona Healthcare Expand Home Health Monitoring Program to Enhance the Care of Cardiac, Pulmonary and Post-operative Patients

31 August 2015

Expansion Builds on Project’s First Phase Success in Helping Reduce Hospital Readmissions of Patients with Heart Disease

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — August 31, 2015 — Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), through its Qualcomm® Wireless Reach™ initiative; Qualcomm Life, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated; and Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH), the parent organization of Flagstaff Medical Center, today announced the expansion of the groundbreaking home health monitoring program, Care Beyond Walls and Wires, to include more segments of NAH’s patient population. The expansion also includes the use of individualized remote monitoring kits powered by Qualcomm Life’s 2net™ Connectivity Platform and HealthyCircles™ Platform to enable seamless, team-based, care coordination and near real-time patient monitoring whether patients are at home or on the go.

Qualcomm and NAH have been collaborating since 2011 to explore the use of advanced wireless technologies in enhancing the care of patients. This work focused on patients who had been discharged from Flagstaff Medical Center and Verde Valley Medical Center following an admission for congestive heart failure or related cardiac conditions, and were at high risk for readmission.

“We had phenomenal results working with Qualcomm Wireless Reach on the first phase of the Care Beyond Walls and Wires project,” says Gigi Sorenson, RN, MSN Director of Telehealth Services for NAH and Care Beyond Walls and Wires. “Putting smartphones and biometric health-monitoring devices in the hands of patients empowered them to take better control of their health. For project participants, we’ve tracked significantly fewer hospitalizations, shorter hospitalizations and dramatically lower costs.” For the first 50 patients enrolled in the program, compared to the six months prior to enrollment, Flagstaff Medical Center found that patients had fewer hospitalizations (1.82 vs. 3.26 mean per patient) and fewer days hospitalized (5.13 vs. 13.98 mean per patient) in the six months following enrollment. As a result, hospital charges per patient were a mean of $92,317 less in the six months following enrollment.[1]

Building on this success, the project collaborators are now leveraging Qualcomm Life’s 2net™ Platform and 2net Hub, as well as its HealthyCircles™ Care Coordination Platform to enable an improved remote monitoring solution that expands and enhances the care of cardiac patients, pulmonary patients and patients needing post-operative care. The far-reaching wireless capabilities of this program will continue to be especially important to patients who live in ultra-rural areas where landline phones may not be available. Some patients also have limited access to electricity and running water and finding transportation to see a physician on a regular basis can be challenging.

The new solution includes:

  • Customized remote health monitoring kits – Each kit is tailored to the patients based on their technology needs, health condition, and contains either a 2net Hub or the HealthyCircles Mobile medical-grade application that is powered by 2net Mobile, which is preloaded on a smartphone. The kit also contains connected medical devices specific to a patient’s condition such as cardiac patients, pulmonary patients, and patients needing post-operative care. Biometric data is seamlessly captured and aggregated from the medical devices via the 2net Hub or 2net Mobile.
  • Both 2net Hub and 2net Mobile collect and transmit biometric data from each biometric device to the HealthyCircles Platform for patient and health care professional access. The HealthyCircles Platform provides health care professionals a direct channel to deliver disease management guidance, wellness education and other health content straight to the patient’s smartphone. Patients can use the mobile application to message their nurse care manager, set medication reminders, and track and update their medical information - which then updates their personal and clinical care record. They can also use the customized mobile application to remotely participate in care management programs, allowing health care professionals to monitor a patients’ current health state and receive triggered alerts if a patient’s health status is deteriorating.

“We are excited about deepening Qualcomm’s collaboration with NAH to use our advanced, medicalgrade, connectivity solutions to power a robust remote monitoring program that will help improve the health of more patients with chronic diseases,” says Rick Valencia, senior vice president and general manager, Qualcomm Life. “Combining 2net connectivity capabilities with HealthyCircles care coordination and exception based management functionality enables a secure and scalable personalized Platform that can ultimately increase patient engagement and adherence while helping health care professionals deliver targeted interventions in an efficient manner.”

Cerner and Qualcomm Collaborate to Advance Remote Home Health Monitoring Cerner and Qualcomm Collaborate to Advance Remote Home Health Monitoring

13 April 2015

KANSAS CITY, Mo. and SAN DIEGO, Ca. — April 13, 2015 — Cerner Corp. (NASDAQ: CERN) and Qualcomm Life, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), today announced an agreement to extend Cerner’s industry leading medical device connectivity capabilities beyond the hospital to the home. Cerner will leverage Qualcomm Life’s FDA listed 2net™ Platform and Hub to seamlessly capture data from medical devices and sensors within a patient’s home, and transmit it to Cerner health care clients through Cerner’s CareAware® device connectivity platform. Through this initiative, care providers can remotely monitor chronically ill patients in near realtime to enable proactive engagement to potentially reduce the risk of an acute care episode.

Qualcomm Life’s 2net Platform collects, stores and aggregates patient data from connected medical devices provided to the patient, such as weight scales, blood pressure monitors and pulse oximeters. These data values will transmit via CareAware® to the Cerner Millennium® electronic health record (EHR) and is viewable to the patient in HealtheLife℠, Cerner’s patient engagement solution. Extending CareAware to integrate devices within the home to the patient’s EHR will provide health care organizations a more comprehensive view in their efforts to focus on chronic condition management, reduce readmissions and improve patient health and satisfaction. The connected devices will be demonstrated in Cerner’s booth (913) and Qualcomm Life’s Ecosystem Pavilion (6420 in Hall B) at HIMSS15, the largest health information technology event in the industry, April 12 – 16 in Chicago, Ill.

“The industry is more concerned than ever about monitoring a patient’s health outside the walls of the hospital through intelligently connected devices,” said John Gresham, vice president of DeviceWorks, Cerner. “Cerner’s CareAware device connectivity platform integrated with Qualcomm Life’s technology will enable prescribable, turn-key monitoring capabilities that can be tailored to the needs of a person’s chronic conditions across the care continuum, including the home.”

Qualcomm Life will join Cerner’s CareAware certification program, an initiative that creates alliances between Cerner and medical device manufacturers to better acquire data from devices to integrate with the EHR via CareAware device connectivity architecture. “Our collaboration with Cerner will enable expanded reach of a scalable, remote patient monitoring (RPM) solution and is a step toward the realization of widespread population health management,” said Rick Valencia, general manager and senior vice president, Qualcomm Life, Inc. “As the industry transitions from episodic care within acute care settings to continuous care, available away from the bedside, there is a need for a secure, medical-grade connectivity solution, which our 2net Platform provides.”

Agnesian HealthCare is one of the first enterprise clients to implement this powerful combination of technologies to remotely monitor and manage at-risk patient populations. “It is increasingly important that providers are monitoring the whole health of an individual, not just at the point of care in the facility,” said Michael DeGeer, DPM, FACPS, FACFAS, vice president of Population Health Management, Agnesian HealthCare. “Remote Patient Monitoring allows our clinicians to have access to patients health data, within the patient’s health record, while they are at home, which will provide the opportunity for clinicians to make informed interventions as needed.”

About Cerner
Cerner’s health information technologies connect people, information and systems at more than 18,000 facilities worldwide. Recognized for innovation, Cerner solutions assist clinicians in making care decisions and enable organizations to manage the health of populations. The company also offers an integrated clinical and financial system to help health care organizations manage revenue, as well as a wide range of services to support clients’ clinical, financial and operational needs.
